Edouard Mendy to skip international duty as Chelsea stopper needs surgery but Hakim Ziyech travels

Edouard Mendy will not be joining up with Senegal for the international break over the next fortnight as he will remain in London.

The Blues stopper, who has kept nine clean sheets since Thomas Tuchel took charge, needs an operation on a tooth and Tuchel confirmed after Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United that the goalkeeper will not be joining up with his country.

“Edou Mendy will stay because he has an operation on his tooth. He needs to see the dentist because it needs to be done. It’s why we do it now.”

Hakim Ziyech however will be joining up with Morocco for their AFCON qualifiers against Mauritania and Burundi.

Tuchel said post-match of his two international stars: “Hakim yes, like everybody else with the same rules and possibilities.

Ziyech netted the second of the game at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea saw off Sheffield United 2-0 in the FA Cup quarter finals on Sunday afternoon to secure a spot at Wembley for the semi finals.

Chelsea were far from their best as a spirited Blades, rock-bottom of the Premier League, caused plenty of problems after half time and should have been level midway through the second period when David McGoldrick headed wide from close range when completely unmarked.

Ziyech’s goal on the counterattack added to an own goal in the first half from Ollie Norwood, turning Ben Chilwell’s cross/shot into his own net past Aaron Ramsdale.

The result took Chelsea unbeaten run under Tuchel since he replaced Frank Lampard to 14 games and also stretched their run without conceding a goal at Stamford Bridge to 11 hours.
