Mikel Arteta given deadline to improve Arsenals fortunes or face sack

Arsenal board reportedly have no intention of dismissing Mikel Arteta as manager in the near future, even preparing to hand him funds to spend in the summer, but if results have not improved by the end of the year he will be out of a job.

The Gunners are having one of their worse seasons in a generation, now looking likely to miss out on a place in European competition for the first time since 1995.

Arteta’s side go into the weekend’s action ninth in the Premier League table, having been knocked out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage by Villarreal earlier in the week.

Unai Emery, Arteta’s predecessor, was dismissed for less obvious failure but the board are not ready to wield the axe on Arteta just yet.

The Sun report that both owner Stan Kroenke and technical director Edu maintain faith in the Spaniard and he will be in charge at the start of next season and have money to spend over the summer.

This is not a limitless supply of faith though, with Arteta having until the end of the calendar year to sort the team out or face dismissal.

Arteta made the worrying admission that the club is on a downward trend, after their Europa League exit on Thursday, but called for unity to address the situation.

‘I understand [fans’] concerns because when you are out of the Champions League for five years it is not just a casualty, it’s a trend,’ he said.

‘There are facts to support that trend. So, there are things to change, that’s for sure because you know no one is going to accept that at this football club. I am not going to accept that, and the fans are not going to accept that. So we all have to push together to achieve something very different.’

The first pictures of Arsenal’s first team squad sporting next season’s away kit have been leaked.

After this season’s, bloodshot eyes shirt, the club are returning to a more traditional yellow and blue combination for 2021/22.

The shade of yellow – ‘pearl citrine’ in adidas parlance – may look a little like custard but the use of the stripped-back cannon badge is a nice touch.

We expect to see similar shots of the home and third kits in due course. The latter is predicted to be blue with a lightning motif inspired by the kits of the mid-nineties.
