Kevin Campbell urges Arsenal to sell Reiss Nelson on one condition
Kevin Campbell has urged Arsenal to sell Reiss Nelson on the condition a buy-back clause is included in any prospective deal.
Despite impressing in the group stages of the Europa League earlier this season, the 21-year-old has found first-team opportunities difficult to come by. Nelson, who is a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, has been afforded just two appearances in the Premier League this season and is way behind in the pecking order of wingers at the club.
Arteta has plenty of forward options at his disposal.
While fellow academy graduates Joe Willock and Ainsley-Maitland Niles sealed loan moves to Premier League clubs in January, Nelson has remained in north London, where he has been limited to playing for the Under-23s of late. And former Gunners striker Campbell doesn’t see a current pathway for the England youth international at the club, but if he is sold, wants a buy-back clause inserted in his contract.
He told Football Insider:
‘Reiss Nelson is 21 now. Going out on loan is difficult because there is so many players ahead of him right now. ‘For me, he has got to play football and realistically he is not going to get that regularly at Arsenal.
‘I would love the club to do a deal where we sell him but we have first refusal on him after, because he knows the Arsenal way.
‘Getting game time is very difficult right now during this rebuild. Go away, get minutes, prove yourself and if we like what we see we will bring you back. ‘That would not be a problem because he would have 100/200 games under his belt.’
