It’s an old cliché but things can change very quickly in football.

It was only on Saturday that David Luiz was named man of the match in Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United and lauded for his clenched-fist celebration of heading Bruno Fernandes’ free kick away.

After the match Mikel Arteta was fielding questions about a potential contract extension for the Brazilian when his deal expires at the end of the season, and the Gunners boss refused to rule it out.

“No, there are still a few months to go on that,” he said when quizzed on the possibility of a renewal.

all the time talk to him about this kind of thing so we’re in a good position.”

Just three days later though that talk has evaporated and it’s wake has come the latest controversial incident in his short Arsenal career.

The red card the Brazilian picked up against Wolves has certainly divided opinion, but what cannot be argued is the error he committed in the build up.

When he failed the left sided centre back space the Brazilian should have been was vacated and Wolves were able to easily work it through to Jose who ran into the box where the penalty was eventually given.

The fact that the contact between Luiz and Jose was so minimal does not change the fact that the defender was only scrambling back so desperately because of the naïve mistake he had made to be drawn out of position.

If a young defender like William Saliba for example had made this error then you could maybe forgive him, but at 33-years-of-age David Luiz has shown Arteta why it is probably time to move on.

Arteta has previously said he wants just four or five centre backs in his squad competing for places and it is becoming increasingly difficult to see where the Brazilian fits into that.

The first pictures of Arsenal’s first team squad sporting next season’s away kit have been leaked.

After this season’s, bloodshot eyes shirt, the club are returning to a more traditional yellow and blue combination for 2021/22.

The shade of yellow – ‘pearl citrine’ in adidas parlance – may look a little like custard but the use of the stripped-back cannon badge is a nice touch.

We expect to see similar shots of the home and third kits in due course. The latter is predicted to be blue with a lightning motif inspired by the kits of the mid-nineties.
